FAQ

Questions, in plain English.

New to amateur radio software, or just to HAMORA? Start here. Every technical word on this site is explained in the glossary below.

New to amateur radio software?

What is a QSO?

A QSO is a contact between two amateur radio stations. You log it by recording the other station’s callsign, the date and time in UTC, the band or frequency, the mode, and usually the signal reports you exchanged.

HAMORA fills in most of that for you: the time is recorded automatically, and the frequency sets the band.

What is ADIF?

ADIF is the standard file format for amateur radio logbooks. Every logging program can read and write it.

In HAMORA, ADIF import and export are free on every plan, so you can bring your old log in and take your log anywhere, at any time.

What is DXCC?

DXCC is a list of about 340 countries and territories, called entities, maintained by ARRL. Working as many as you can is one of the oldest goals in amateur radio.

HAMORA knows every entity, tells you when a callsign would be a new one for you, and tracks your progress by band and mode.

What is APRS?

APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) lets stations send their position, weather readings and short messages. APRS-IS carries the same information over the internet.

HAMORA shows APRS stations around you on a map, receive-only. With HAMORA Bridge and Dire Wolf it can also show what your own radio hears.

What is WSJT-X?

WSJT-X is a free computer program for weak-signal digital modes, most famously FT8 and FT4. It runs on the computer connected to your radio.

HAMORA follows what WSJT-X decodes, on your phone, and adds the contacts WSJT-X completes to your log. It never controls WSJT-X.

What is HAMORA Bridge?

HAMORA Bridge is a small, free program for the computer next to your radio, such as a Raspberry Pi or a Mac. It shares your radio’s frequency and mode, WSJT-X activity and APRS heard on RF with your phones, over your own home network.

Today it only reads: it doesn’t change your radio or transmit. The installers are being tested and aren’t published yet.

What is Cloud sync?

Cloud sync keeps your logbook the same on all your phones, with a private copy in HAMORA Cloud. It needs a HAMORA account and is part of HAMORA Lifetime.

Each phone keeps its own full copy, so you can still log offline.

What is Cloud Relay?

Cloud Relay is a planned optional service that would let your phone reach your own station, through HAMORA Bridge, from outside your home network. Its first stage is read-only monitoring.

HAMORA plans to build complete remote station access on it later, stage by stage, each behind its own security gate. It is in reliability and security testing, isn’t available, can’t be bought, and has no release date. The Bridge on your own network stays free.

What’s the difference between Free, Lifetime and Cloud Relay?

Free is the HAMORA app at no cost, with no time limit: logging, ADIF, Explore, propagation, APRS, digital modes, awards, contest logging and HAMORA Bridge on your network.

Lifetime is one optional in-app purchase (USD 49.99) that never renews. It adds deeper insights, sync across devices, automatic QSL sync, personalized alerts and contest scoring.

Cloud Relay is a separate, planned yearly service for remote access to your Bridge. It isn’t available yet. Lifetime doesn’t include it, and it doesn’t include Lifetime.

Release and availability

Can I download HAMORA today?

Not yet. HAMORA for iPhone is built and waiting for release, and HAMORA for Android is in Google Play’s internal testing. Store links will appear on the Download page only when a release is public.

What do the status labels mean?

Available Now: released to the public. Built — Pending Release: finished and waiting for release. In Testing: being tested, not public. In Development: being built, not finished or tested. Planned: on the roadmap, not built. Future Research / Security-Gated: research that needs its own security, safety and legal review, and may never ship.

Is there a release date?

No. Each part is released when its testing is complete. We don’t publish dates we can’t promise.

Which radios work with HAMORA?

HAMORA reads radios through Hamlib, which supports hundreds of models. HAMORA hasn’t been tested with physical radios yet, so we don’t claim support for any specific model; a list of tested radios is planned. See the Compatibility page.

Will HAMORA ever control or transmit with my radio?

Not today. HAMORA is read-only and receive-only, and Cloud Relay’s first stage is read-only monitoring.

Remote control and transmission are later stages of the Cloud Relay vision. Each needs its own security, safety and legal review, would work only with supported radios and for verified, authorized operators, and isn’t guaranteed to ship. You’d remain responsible for operating lawfully under your licence.

Plans and purchases

Is HAMORA really free?

Yes. Logging, offline use and ADIF import and export are free, with no time limit and no account.

Free also includes read-only CAT, WSJT-X, APRS (including advanced APRS), HAMORA Bridge on your network, propagation, Explore, analytics, awards and contest logging.

What does Lifetime add?

HAMORA Intelligence, award-aware Explore, personal propagation history, equipment comparisons, HAMORA Cloud sync across devices, automatic QSL sync, personalized alerts, and contest scoring with Cabrillo export.

Your logbook is never locked: export it as ADIF at any time, on any plan.

Is there a subscription?

Not for the app. Lifetime is a single purchase that never renews.

The only subscription planned is Cloud Relay, an optional yearly service for reaching your Bridge over the internet. It isn't available yet. There are no monthly plans.

What does “Lifetime” mean?

It's a one-time purchase that never renews and unlocks the Lifetime features. The Terms of Use set out exactly what it covers.

Does Lifetime include Cloud Relay?

No. They're separate: Lifetime doesn't include Cloud Relay, and Cloud Relay doesn't unlock Lifetime features. The planned price is USD 14.99 a year, and USD 7.99 a year is planned for Lifetime owners. That lower price isn't guaranteed: it depends on App Store and Google Play rules.

Is HAMORA Bridge free?

Yes. HAMORA Bridge on your own network is free, whatever you've bought, online or offline. Only remote access over the internet will need Cloud Relay.

Do I need a HAMORA account?

No. HAMORA works fully without one, and Lifetime belongs to your App Store or Google Play account.

An account is optional. It's needed for HAMORA Cloud sync, and it carries Lifetime to your other devices. Cloud Relay will require one.

How do I restore Lifetime on a new phone?

Sign in to the same App Store or Google Play account, then tap More → HAMORA Free → Restore purchases. If you use a HAMORA account, sign in there too.

Can I get a refund?

Purchases are made through the App Store or Google Play, and refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their policies.

Privacy and your data

Where is my logbook stored?

On your phone. HAMORA works without an account or internet. A copy goes to HAMORA Cloud only if you turn on Cloud sync.

Does HAMORA track me?

No ads, no advertising identifiers and no tracking across apps. Usage statistics and crash reports are off until you turn them on.

How do I delete my account?

In the app: More → Profile → Manage account → Delete HAMORA Account. Without the app, follow the steps on the Delete account page.

Glossary

QSO
A contact between two radio stations. Logging a QSO means recording who you talked to, when, on which band and in which mode.
ADIF
The standard file format for logbooks. Any logging program can read and write it, so your log is never locked in.
DXCC
The list of about 340 countries and territories (“entities”) amateurs collect. A “new DXCC” is one you haven’t worked yet.
DX and DX spots
DX means a distant station. A DX spot is a short public message saying a station was heard on a frequency; a DX cluster shares them.
APRS
Automatic Packet Reporting System: stations send their position, weather and short messages. APRS-IS is its internet side.
WSJT-X
A free computer program for weak-signal digital modes such as FT8 and FT4. HAMORA follows what it decodes and logs its completed contacts.
CAT
Computer Aided Transceiver: how a computer talks to a radio over a cable. HAMORA only reads from the radio.
Hamlib and rigctld
Hamlib is a free library that speaks to hundreds of radio models. Its rigctld service shares your radio on your home network.
Dire Wolf
A free program that turns your radio’s audio into APRS packets, so a computer can see what your radio hears.
HAMORA Bridge
A small, free program for the computer next to your radio. It shares your radio, WSJT-X and APRS heard on RF with your phones on your home network, read-only.
Cloud sync
An optional part of HAMORA Lifetime that keeps your logbook the same on all your phones, with a private copy in HAMORA Cloud.
Cloud Relay
A planned optional service for reaching your own station from outside your home network. Its first stage, read-only monitoring, is in testing; remote control is a later, security-gated stage. Not available yet.
QSL and LoTW
A QSL confirms a contact, on a paper card or online. LoTW (Logbook of the World) is ARRL’s online confirmation service.
POTA, SOTA and WWFF
Programs for operating from parks (POTA), summits (SOTA) and flora and fauna areas (WWFF). The operator out there is the “activator”.
Cabrillo
The file format contest sponsors ask for when you send in your contest log.
Grid square
A short code such as OJ03 for your location on the Maidenhead grid. Amateurs use it instead of exact addresses.
Solar flux and K-index
Space-weather numbers. Higher solar flux usually helps the upper HF bands; a high K-index means a disturbed magnetic field and poorer conditions.
PTT
Push-to-talk: keying a transmitter. HAMORA can’t do this today. Remote PTT is a later, security-gated stage of the Cloud Relay vision, not available.
Free, Lifetime and Cloud Relay
Free is the app at no cost. Lifetime is one optional in-app purchase that never renews. Cloud Relay is a separate planned yearly service, not available yet.
